Hi all,

I'm just finishing up a long project of transplanting a Honda Hawk motor and transmission into an 89 Transalp.
I was wondering about what you all though about the different gear ratios...

I will be doing a lot of highway riding, but would also still want to be able to do a hill climb. Should I keep the 16t Hawk front sprocket and the 47 Alp sprocket as-is?
Currently its 16t front, 47t back

ALso what is a good source for an Africa twin Instrument, headlight and front cowl, so I can finish the conversion to make it a bonafide RD03?
-Will post photos soon.

The Transmission Ratios according to MotorcyclePerformanceAnalyzer.com are different than what I came up with when counting the teeth on the shafts. With the NT650 Transmission you end up with a lower 2nd, 3rd, 4th and a slightly higher 5th gear while keeping the same 1st gear.

Did you use the NT650 Carburetors? That's where the 650 get most of it's power.

Here's what I came up with in my bikes.

(Sorry for the formatting)

Transmission
Ratios
Main Shaft Countershaft Transmission
XL600V Teeth Teeth Ratio
1st 14 36 2.57
2nd 18 32 1.78
3rd 21 29 1.38
4th 24 27 1.13
5th 26 25 0.96

NT650
1st 14 36 2.57 Same
2nd 17 32 1.88 Lower
3rd 20 29 1.45 Lower
4th 23 28 1.22 Lower
5th 29 27 0.93 Higher

This is what they look like on a graph.

interesting, that's great for me actually.
Does this include the difference in the sprockets?

TA - 15f, 47r
H - 16f, 44r

My config. 16f, 47r with Hawk trans

I am running the Hawk Carbs, ignition, electrical harness, pipes, and TA everything else. Pod filters and stock TA muffler. Jetted the pilots a little leaner because of the 600cc spec muffler.

That does not include the sprockets, just the internals.

If you want, I can send you an Excel Spread Sheet I made where you can tell it what your RPM is, what sprockets you are using and what circumference rear tire you have and it will tell you what your speed in any gear at that RPM.
