For comfort not height. Has anyone got any recommendations please. The standard seat on my 650 is awful!

I have used both a sheepskin, and before that, a car bench seat cover that was folded in three to form a square, then stitched, and nylon web straps sewn to the 4 corners. Both worked well, on my Transalp 650 as well as other bikes.

I'm a happy user of Gel Seat pads. For normal everyday use I leave it at home. But, if I'm going to be out all day I strap the pad on and it makes all the difference in the world. Even on my Goldwing GL1800 I throw it in the trunk and if my butt gets tired I bring the pad out and it's like starting over again because now I'm using different pressure points. Also it jacks you up a little higher so now your knees and shoulders are at a slightly different angle after been sitting still for 200-300 miles.
